At Thermen Berendonck, we are fully committed to sustainability. The more sustainable our resort becomes, the more you can enjoy a relaxing day—or even several days—without placing unnecessary strain on the environment. With a focus on keeping our ecological footprint as small as possible, we take responsibility and make significant steps toward a sustainable world.

How green is Thermen Berendonck?

Thermen Berendonck does everything it can to protect the environment—without guests having to compromise on quality or comfort. How does that work?

  1. With the heat recovery system (HRV installation), warmth released from, among other things, the kitchen is filtered from odors and used to heat the building. Through floor cooling, we extract heat from the saunas, which is then reused for underfloor heating in the sauna square. In addition, Thermen Berendonck also makes use of several heat pumps. Using our heat pumps is a sustainable solution for environmentally friendly heating.

  2. Another smart energy-saving measure at Thermen Berendonck is the resort’s lighting: all indoor and outdoor lighting uses LED with a high lumen output per watt. The lighting is also controlled by motion sensors and managed through a building management system.

  3. Measures have also been taken to save water. For example, the heat from shower wastewater is collected and reused to warm other sources. The resort also uses water-saving showerheads.

  4. Thermen Berendonck already has more than 600 solar panels on the roof. At the parking area, carports with many more solar panels have been installed—an important step toward a more sustainable future.

... Thermen Berendonck is all-electric, meaning no use of gas. That is truly unique in the sauna world.

... Its own spring water is pumped up and used for showers, toilets, and baths. This water meets drinking water quality standards.

... The 600 solar panels on the roof generate more than 195,000 kWh; equal to the annual consumption of over 45 households.

... The wood used in the new construction comes from FSC-certified forests. This means the forests are responsibly managed, tree harvesting is balanced with nature, and new trees are planted—so deforestation is prevented.

... The Chaay Ghar sauna is built in the style of an Indian teahouse, fully insulated with hemp blocks and finished with clay. This technique creates pleasant humidity, a comfortable climate, and ensures the sauna retains heat for longer.
